Since my friends hear me on Skype, I assume that in my case sound is converted to PCM, i.e the recording should be possible. On the other hand, Skype (the version I'm using) is an OSS, not ALSA application. In fact, as I recollect it, I was first able to hear sound using an OSS based application. If nobody on the list answers, file a bug - that was the way to obtain from ALSA developers the exact instructions on how to really hear sound from line in and mic on 7.1.
