Installed 2.6.17.4 kernel with no sound success. Some things I note are:
alsa 1.0.11rc4 compiled in kernel
module compiled for snd-hda-intel ( Worked with 2.6.13 kernel - alsa
1.0.9b which came with Slackware 10.2)
Boot Notes: Alsa device list: No sound cards found
hda-intel azx_get_response timeout, switching to
single command mode
hda-codec Unknown model for ALC861, trying
autoprobe from BIOS
lsmod for both 2.6.13 & 2.6.17 shows snd-hda-intel

"
-timer
"
-page-alloc
lsmod for 2.6.13 showed above plus snd-pcm-oss Did not
compile any oss modules

"amixer" for 2.6.13 showed a PCM setting - none shown for 2.6.17 --- I
unmuted PCM to get sound on 2.6.13
"amp foo.mp3 " showed Unable to open audio device Broken pipe
