I have been using Linux since 1998 and my problem getting the Realtek/snd-hda-intel card to work has been the most challenging Linux task I have ever run accross. Following your many suggestions I now have the following installed. Latest Slackware 2.4.32 kernel complete source code compiled and installed. I think this is the latest 2.4 stable kernel. Latest Slackware alsa packages 1.0.11 ( drivers, lib, utils ), precompiled with the 2.4.32 kernel, installed.

I then ran alsaconf which set up my system. It played a sound file that I heard. With that setup I got the following results. I was able to use aplay and and reproduce the playing of the above sound file. I tried amp to play an mp3 file - no sound. I tried aplay to play a cdda.wav file of a CD that was prepared by cdparanoia - no sound. I tried mpg321 to play the mp3 file and the whole system locked up. I went through all of the suggestions at the following website with no success - http://alsa.opensrc.org/TroubleShooting.

Have you tried the various model options for your codec described in
ALSA-Configuration.txt?

I looked in this file for model options and could find none. I tried an option from a mailing list post with no success ( probably a different card ). There was a suggestion that I copy /proc/asound/card0/codec#3 and forward it for analysis. I attach that file.

You cannot compile an old ALSA against a newer kernel.

I have now tried 4 different kernels and drivers from 1.0.9 to 1.0.12rc1 in various combinations and this latest setup seems to be about my best chance because I have no compiling problems, no unresolved symbol problems and I have an output channel ( PCM ) to unmute. Please advise.
