I've managed to now get analog signal (I think) coming out my optical port.  My receiver shows the # of channels it has detected.  When I kaffeine dvd:/ I get two channels even after ensuring through the DVD menus that 5.1 is enabled.  aplay file.mp3 plays fine, however aplay test.ac3 plays static (I'm not 100% sure the file is good though since I've never been able to listen to it)  If I plug an optical cable from a DVD player into the same port on my receiver it shows 5.1 channels -- so it's not the receiver.

Here's my .asoundrc that I got from a ALSA howto.  With this one I managed to get analog working
through the digital port.  Any ideas on this?  Thanx!
