You need to make sure your system is not loading the "emu10k1" module,
and make sure it loads "snd-emu10k1" instead.

How this is done is distro specific, I can't help any more. Slackware
seems to be a poor choice if you want this to Just Work.

and now when I start ogg123 I get this below ... it is a bit muted
and static-y alsamixer won't launch cause it doesn't see it...

I assume it is using OSS and not ALSA

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/lib/modules/2.4.29/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1# ogg123 /home/music/volume2/disc3/Track01.ogg ALSA lib confmisc.c:560:(snd_determine_driver) could not open control for card 0 ALSA lib conf.c:3479:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_card_driver returned error: No such device
ALSA lib confmisc.c:392:(snd_func_concat) error evaluating strings
ALSA lib conf.c:3479:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_concat returned error: No such device
ALSA lib confmisc.c:955:(snd_func_refer) error evaluating name
ALSA lib conf.c:3479:(_snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_refer returned error: No such device
ALSA lib conf.c:3948:(snd_config_expand) Evaluate error: No such
device
ALSA lib pcm.c:2090:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default

Audio Device: OSS audio driver output

Playing: /home/music/volume2/disc3/Track01.ogg
Ogg Vorbis stream: 2 channel, 32000 Hz

I don't want this to "Just Work" I'm trying to get it to work.

I didn't know kernel modules were distro specific... news to me

I'm not a Linux newbie... Sound is a PINA in any distro

I was just looking for a little help... maybe someone that uses Slackware. I don't do RPMs or Debs and since this is a server I chose not to install KDE and Slack 10.2 doesn't ship with Gnome anymore.

Wondering if ALSA has a new driver for this card?

what does /lib/modules/2.4.29/kernel/drivers/sound/ look like on a system that has the snd-emu10k1 module and the emu10k1 module
