Hi David, thanks for your help. But I kind of doub that this is the problem. In both cases (on my laptop and on my PC) behave the same way in alsamixer. Q/Z increase/decrease the left channel volume E/C increase/decrease the right channel volume W/X increase/decrease both channel volumes at once
What I am wondering is, that the command "amixer set Front 50" sets both(!) channels to 50 at once and "amxier set Front 40,50" sets the left one to 40 and the right one to 50 - the same holds for increasing or decreasing the volumes using a trailing + or - (Using two parameters however, I'm getting the described message.) So what I'm actually wondering now is, why "set Front 50" sets both(!) channels to 50, "set Front mute" mutes both(!) channels, "set Front unmute" unmutes both(!) channels, but "set Front toggle" toggles only the left(!) channel... The actual hardware stuff put aside - is this a behaviour a user might assume when calling "set Front toggle"?! Thanks, Ivo P.S.: Right now I got around the problem by using some kind of workaround. I created an alias "toggle_mute" for the command "amixer set Front 0+,toggle; amixer set Front toggle,0+" David Slimp schrieb:
It's very likely that each volume controller of the card in your PC is for a single (mono) channel, where the controllers in your laptop manage two channels at once (stereo). Try running alsamixer, and then move to some various volume sliders and press "q" a few times, and then "z" a few times. you may see a difference in L/R (stereo - MAYBE mono panning), or no difference between "q" and "up arrow" (mono for sure). My laptop / PC do the same thing as yours.... it's just the way the different cards are designed. David
