I have some trouble with the soundchip in my Sony Vaio V505CP notebook.
I use Redhat and the default driver was i810_audio. Because of problems with this (after a while sound did not work anymore, dma timeout) I switched to ALSA 1.0.4.
ALSA installation worked, modules are loaded, but the sound is very
ugly. It is spluttering like a CD with scratches.
I tried it with Realplayer and a CD (which is o.k.) with xmms. Both produce the same
ugly sound.
I searched in this mailing list, but found nothing. Perhaps something with the sampling rate, I have no idea.
I would be glad, if someone can help me. Regards Michael
/proc/pci says following about the soundchip: Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801DB AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 3).
