More info on the problem:  it doesn't matter whether I'm logged in to KDE or just to
a character-mode shell.  I tried running KMix and turning up all the ouputs without
success.  I then ran aumix and turned up the outputs, also to no success.  While a CD
is playing I can playback an ogg with Noatun, and the ogg plays back just fine.

Personally I don't understand how the sound drivers could affect the CD audio, so I
