As a followup to my initial whining / counter statements, today I went and picked up the Creative Labs Soundblaster MP3+ (cheap) and after figuring out that I needed to compile the kernel without audio support under USB (but with ALSA USB support enabled) I am now able to play and record with the 2.6.3 kernel, Arts and KDE 3.2 (noatun is churning through MP3s as I type). Fscking eh! No major stress tests yet so I will have to see how it goes after a few days of normal music listening / recording but so far so good. Arts had horrible sound initially but tracked that down to the default dettings in alsamixer being a little less than optimal (line in disabled, master very low but not off). A couple of tweaks there and now my Behringer Truths are happily blaring industrial music again. =) Thanks for the suggestion Frank and now I can finally get back to recording my own music (and listing my middle finger to standards M-Audio Audiophile USB on ebay).
