I'm using Libranet 2.8.1, I installed ALSA shortly after installing the OS. I have a ASUS A7V8X-X, it detected as a AC'97 card and installed the via82cxxx drivers. Sound worked fine once I updated ALSA to 0.9.8.1. Then I updated my system... (basically a dist-update, but only with packages confirmed stable for Libranet, includes packages from stable, testing, and unstable) Sound stopped working, artsd was crashing on startup with:

Sound server fatal error:

cpu overload, aborting

and I had no sound. I disabled artsd, still no sound. In the KDE sound config I changed autodetect to ALSA, no sound. The only thing that's ever given me an error message was trying to use aplay to run a sound file:

Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/login.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 4 4100 Hz, Stereo
aplay: pcm_write:1084: write error: Input/output error

I've chmod'ed /dev/snd to 777, checked a bunch of mixers (aumix, alsamixer, kmixer) to make sure nothing was muted, and run alsaconf a bunch of times.

Please help! Once I get sound working this system is perfect, :).
