in ALSA >= 1.0.0 Front, Surround, Center, LFE volume controls only
upmixing (mirroring).
if you set surround, center to 0) you dissable mirroring to surround
and center. LFE is (L + R) / 2. If you need downpass filter for LFE
from L, R channels, then you must change DSP program in driver.

If you want mono to Center + LFE then define new device(or change
front device) in .asoundrc (look
at /usr/share/alsa/conf/card/Audigy2.conf for example rear device and
set routing only to center, lfe fxbus for mono sound and Left, Right,
lfe for stereo sound - and use PCM Center, LFE Volume and PCM Left,
PCM Right), or change emu10k1 driver to your needs. (or use ld10k1 to
set your own routing).

For 5.1 playback PCM Front, PCM surround, PCM center, PCM LFE volume
controls are used and they are independent from from Front, Surround,
Center and LFE controls.

PS: For me windows mixer always do upmixing to 5.1.
