I don't use the mic input, nor do i have a via chipset. I use a cs46xx soundcard and i found i have to enable capture on a combination of sliders in alsamixer. If i want to record from line in i have to enable capture on "line in", "capture" and "ADC". I think i heard reports that some mixer applications only allow one capture device to be enabled. Maybe using alsamixer helps with that. Play around with the mixer controls. Maybe the mic-in is also used as bass out or something, so recording has to be enabled first via some esoteric alsamixer setting..
