I don't use the mic input, nor do i have a via chipset. I use a cs46xx
soundcard and i found i have to enable capture on a combination of
sliders in alsamixer. If i want to record from line in i have to enable
capture on "line in", "capture" and "ADC".

I think i heard reports that some mixer applications only allow one
capture device to be enabled. Maybe using alsamixer helps with that.
Play around with the mixer controls. Maybe the mic-in is also used as
bass out or something, so recording has to be enabled first via some
esoteric alsamixer setting..
