interesting.
for debugging, please do the following:

1. unload the ALSA drivers (e.g. via "rcalsasound stop")
2. remove (or rename) /etc/asound.state.
3. start ALSA again.  in this stage, most of mixer stuffs are muted as
   default. 
4. raise and unmute "Master" and "PCM".

   now, try speaker_test with 2 channels.
   check whether left and right signals come correctly.

5. raise "Surround".  you can only left or right of this channel via
   'Q'/'Y' or 'E'/'C' keys, respectively.

   try speaker_test with 4 channels.

6. raise for "Center" and "LFE".  (they are mono elements, BTW).
   try surround51.
