the unmute was most of the problem, but the games still won't work with sound, armyops says "/dev/[sound/]dsp: device or resource busy" that was after i compiled oss emulation into the kernel, also now the other game freezes trying to initialize the sound, kernel says i don't need to run the snddevices script, seeing that the sound still didn't work i tried it, didn't help neither did the MAKEDEV.snd script in the kernel source

does anyone have any other suggestions on how to get /dev/dsp working, the permissions are also right as it won't work as root either

i have changed the volumes with alsamixer so everything is about 50%

Have you unmuted ('M') them, too?

armyops:
        open /dev/[sound/]dsp: No such device

The OSS device nodes are created by the snddevices script in the alsa-driver package.
