0.9.7 is quite old.  amidi was added in 1.0.0pre1.
(You could try to compile and install the alsa-utils-1.0.1 package
manually.)

The driver cannot detect if the given port address is correct (but
there may be some error messages in the output of dmesg).

Please check in the BIOS setup what the actual port address of the
MIDI port is (0x200 is for accessing joystick through the gameport).
It should be either 0x300 or 0x330.
