Shouldn't you connect the keyboard to Timidity instead? (Connecting to
Jazz will work only if you enable MIDI Through in Jazz.)

And what sound card/driver do you use?

ALSA has OSS emulation, so "cat /dev/midi" may actually work.
If you have a recent ALSA version, you can run "amidi -p hw:0 -d".
