If I recall correctly, there is a jumper responsible for this on the audio
card itself to accomodate that.  Mine is like this (3 jacks card).

Adjustment is unconventional, but straightforward for surround material:

1 - Master at 0.
2 - Adjust rear volume with PCM near maximum required (center-rear balance).
3 - Increase front volume with Master to obtain rear-front balance.
4 - Decrease PCM to lower volume on all speakers.

No, it was removed after alsa 0.9.8.  It's now automatically controlled.
