I've seen some other people express similar problems (URL below) but the only solution I've seen is "build the latest cvs." Well, I did that and it didn't seem to have any effect.
I'm beginning to think that either I'm using the wrong driver or that the driver doesn't yet support my exact chipset. The motherboard is an MSI Neo2 865PE (MS-6728) w/ i865PE & ICH5.
According to the docs, the sound chip is a "C-Media 9739A AC'97" chip.
lspci -nv says:
0:1f.5 Class 0401: 8086:24d5 (rev 02) Subsystem: 1462:7280 Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 17 I/O ports at dc00 [size=256] I/O ports at d800 [size=64] Memory at febffa00 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=512] Memory at febff900 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256] Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
And a little help from lspci -v:
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801EB AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02)
Subsystem: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd.: Unknown device 7280
Distro is Debian (mostly testing, some unstable). Kernel is 2.4.21, with SMP. (alsa drivers also built w/ SMP turned on.) I updated my pci ids with todays snapshot (9/24/03)
What else? The motherboard has Line-Out, Line-In, and Mic jacks. There's an "S-bracket" that has optical and coaxial SPDIF as well as an extra Line-In and Line-Out. (I'm currently not using the S-bracket.) I've double checked and am sure that the jumpers are set correctly.
I've used the card in Windows XP and was able to get both 2 and 4 channels out at normal volumes.
Apologies for the information overload -- just don't want to leave anything out.
