Many motherboard makers exchange the meaning of the front and surround jacks because they want some amplification on the default output. (The surround output has amplifiers because it was the headphones output in earlier revisions of the AC'97 specification.) The driver can compensate for this by routing the front channels to the surround output (which is labeled "front"), and by renaming the mixer controls; but the mixer controls cannot be rerouted without hardware support. If you have an AD1985, current CVS (or 0.9.7) has a fix for this.
