I thought the module options would take effect after removing the modules and then doing a modprobe.. looks like i was wrong, i needed to reboot... so yeah using dxs_support=3 fixes the distortion (although it still isnt perfect but its hard to notice).
I still have the problem of the master volume control having no effect, only the PCM and Surround sliders change the volume.. this means programs that try to change the volume (like xmms) have no effect.
