Thanks for your help - actually I hadn't tried the thinkpad=1 option, but
when I do, I now get:
# modprobe snd-cs46xx thinkpad=1
ALSA ../../alsa-kernel/pci/cs46xx/cs46xx_lib.c:3951: Activating CLKRUN hack
for Thinkpad.

I haven't been able to get any sound, as no /dev/dsp device is created and
the /dev/sound directory under devfs only has the two entries "dmmidi" and
"midi".
The puzzling thing is that until this last reinstall, I had not had any
problems like this at all. If fact, I just got my thinking cap on and tried
Knoppix 3.2 - it worked! I don't know what version of Alsa drivers it runs
however, and I couldn't find out very easily on the Knoppix site or through
searching the sound modules...
If anyone has other ideas, please let me know. In the meantime I think I
will try the 0.9.5 version and see if that helps.

Thoose messages seems to temporary failures, some unstable ....
I know that there's is hack made for the Thinkpad in the driver,
but i dont exactly what it does, did you pass the "thinkpad=1" parameter
to the module ?
Apart from the error messages, did you get any sound from the card
on any of your attempts ??
