...and when I try to stop and start Alsa manually I get the following:

Thoose messages seems to temporary failures, some unstable .... I know that there's is hack made for the Thinkpad in the driver, but i dont exactly what it does, did you pass the "thinkpad=1" parameter to the module ?
Apart from the error messages, did you get any sound from the card on any of your attempts ??
