My first question is what ALSA release are you using? I think the multi-open
functionality started in 0.9.0rc3, so you would want a driver at least that new.
(I recommend upgrading to 0.9.1 regardless.)
To check if your current driver supports multiple opens, type:
aplay -l
You should have three devices ("CS46xx", "CS46xx - Rear", and "CS46xx - IEC958")
listed with 31 subdevices under "CS46xx" and "CS46xx - Rear".
If not, you need to upgrade to a newer release.
