Hi Jeff, i'm a bloody sound newbie so I can't tell much, but your problem seems similar to the one I experienced. I have a Creat. Sb Audigy, at the moment I can't tell which ALSA version is on my machine. Alsamixer didn't work, even if I seleceted the right card with -c 1 (I have onboard sound, too, on my via KT( motherboard). E.G. I couln't toggle the capture switch to the right channel.
But with gamix, all went fine, and recording and playing went well. You just klick the small button below the channel controllers to toggle capture or playback, (be sure that the pcm channel controller is pushed up, too) So you might try with gamix. (It came with my Suse 8.1 disribution, so if you don't have it, sorry, can't tell where to get it..)
