then perhaps the mmap problem.

if you didn't configure the oss pcm mode, please try to configure the
PCM mode for quake3 and other applications as described in
alsa-kernel/Documentation/OSS-Emulation.txt (or
http://www.alsa-project.org/~iwai/OSS-Emulation.html) 
you'll need to set "direct" for playback and "disable" for capture
stream, respectively.

there is a configure option for xmms oss output plugin (in the mixer
menu) to choose this.  i thought it's chosen as master as default.
anyway for tests, you can adjust PCM via alsamixer during xmms is
running.

then it's definitely not an ac3 stream.
it sends the normal PCM audio streams through spdif, so i guess we can
do nothing from the driver side about such a speaker configuration.
