Subject: [Alsa-user] Soundblaster 16 installation

Hi, I'm running Redhat 7.3 and am attempting to install a Sound Blaster 16 PCI. I've followed the instructions step by step on the documentation page for the Soundblaster 16 PCI:
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php3?company=Creative+Labs&card=Soundblaster+16+PCI&chip=ES1373&module=ens1371

soundcore was compiled as a module in my kernel, so I followed the quick install instructions. Everything seemed to go fine - I don't get any error messages when compiling or configureing - but I can't get anything working. When I attempt to use alsamixer to change the volume settings I get the message:

alsamixer: failed to open mixer #0/#0: No such file or directory

And if I try to use amixer it says:

The ALSA sound driver was not detected in this system.

Is there something I should be doing that is not on the installation site?

What information does 'lsmod' give? Are the correct modules loaded? Note that 'lsmod' may not be in the mortal user's path on your pc.
