I'm sorry.  I didn't mention it but all three machines have 0.9.0rc7.
lspci says

  00:02.7 Multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS7012 PCI

for this one.  Maybe it's too new.

I recall having the same problem with the kernel OSS drivers on a machine
which used cmpci as the audio driver.  Could it be the same ac97 codec?

Is there anyone else with this ac97 codec?  Can you control the PCM
Playback Volume?
