it's likely because of AC97 codec, not the sound engine.

i guess the driver on this machine is a bit old.

the ac97 codec on both are same, CMI9738.

hmm, strange, i don't found any description about this behavior in the
datasheet...

because it has a different codec chip.
perhaps this codec doesn't support variable bitrates.
