Yes, I ran this after installing the drivers. I also ran it again just
now to be certain, and it doesn't eliminate the problem.

The devices were previously 0660 (group audio), but setting them to 0666
doesn't seem to help. :(

Yes. KMix recognises the mixer without problems, and adjusting a slider
makes the same change appear in alsamixer; mixing definitely seems to be
working right.

I've set XMMS to use the OSS driver, as provided by alsa-driver when
compiling with --with-oss=yes. A simple OSS test of catting a file to
/dev/dsp also results in silence, but no error message.
