I think this is the problem: "> Is your PC CDROM wired to the sound card?" Note that that analog cable isn't neccesary in Windows XP as that uses the IDE cable to play audio CD's. You can use alsaplayer or XMMS with an appropriate plugin to get the same funtionality in Linux.
