the latest driver should work with digital out.
two possibilities:

1) (better one)

   if your applications supports ALSA natively, you can use "iec958"
   pcm as output.

2) (workaround)

   use /dev/adsp as OSS output device.
   set 0 to "IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA".
   turn "IEC958 Output Switch" on.
   turn "IEC958 Playback Switch" on.
