Standard numbers for sound services.
0 - mixer
1 - sequencer
3 - dsp
8 - sequencer2
12 - adsp

What is strange is that xmms doesn't start at first, but starts once I have
manually inserted the snd-ens1371 mod - but it plays through the via686!! so
what does it need the ens1371 module for?
It sounds like you have a problem with your xmms configuration. How did you configure your xmms? What card does it use for output? Maybe you need to modprobe the other one, so that you get enough cards loaded? What happens if you temporarily rename your ~/.xmms directory?
