Ok, thanks.

Well what's strange is that xmms used to play output through the SB16; now
it plays through the via.

I have compiled and installed xmms from the tar.gz.

When I configure it to play through the OSS driver, with the default
/dev/dsp, it plays ok on the via 686.

If I tell it to use the ALSA 0.9 output plugin, I have 3 possibilities:

- via82c686a/b
- es1371 dac2/adc (this is the SB16 PCI first dac)
- es1371 dac1 (the second DAC of the card)

If I choose the via, it plays ok: I heard sound. But if I choose either of
the es1371 options, the song plays (because I see the display changing) but
I hear nothing.

I ran amixer and it gave this:

Simple mixer control 'Master',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 31
Front Left: Playback 31 [100%] [off]
Front Right: Playback 31 [100%] [off]
Simple mixer control 'Master Mono',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pvolume-joined pswitch pswitch-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Limits: Playback 0 - 31
  Mono: Playback 31 [100%] [off]
  Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
etc...

so it seems that the card is off; but with 'alsamixer -c 1' I see that all
volume sliders are at 100%.

Furthermore 'alsactl power' gives

Power state for card #0 is D0
Power state for card #1 is D0

Whatever D0 means, the two cards are in the same state so should both be
able to play, right?

See you.
