Check your /dev entries.  ls -l /dev/snd - it should probably be a link
to /proc/asound/dev.  ls -l /proc/asound/dev and check the device
permissions (you might need to give the options "device_uid=" and
"device_gid=" to the "snd" module)

Ah yes.  The emu10k1 mixer is a little huge...

Best ignore the "PCM routing" elements, but unmute most of the rest. 
Watch out for one called something like "DAC/ADC" loopback - if it's
switched (muted/unmuted) the wrong way then you won't hear anything from
the front speaker socket, I found.
