Hi everybody,
As I was thinking that my problem may come from RedHat distribution more than alsa driver, I've tried to download the last stable kernel from kernel.org and install it on my machine, and it works. I really don't know what it has changed (maybe it's linked with my ieee1394 port with was also staying in state "initializing" after boot I have unchecked support for this one in the new kernel config). So all is ok now !
If you still want to know where this problem was coming from (for any purpose) I have put at the end of this message a copy of my modules.conf, lspci -nvv, lsmod and lspci output from my non-working previous configuration. If you want me to do any other tests to figure where the problem was, I can do that.
The non-working install :
Distribution : Redhat 8.0
Language : French (I have had some problem with that during kernel compilation)
Kernel : 2.4.18-4
Alsa : 0.9rc5 (driver/lib/utils)
Sound Card : Intel Corp. 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Audio (rev 02) (intel8x0 driver)
The working install :
