Emmanuel Fleury has helped me with my alsa installation, but we ran into a further problem that we can't figure out. I have alsa 0.9.0rc3 installed, along with the xmms-alsa plugin, and all my modules for the intel8x0 seem to be installed correctly. I also compiled alsa with --with-oss=yes. I have the volume unmuted in alsamixer.
But when I play a sound in xmms, it is extremely distorted and sounds horrible. The same thing happens with aplay, using either mp3s or wav's.
