I've got a Thinkpad 390X running Redhat 7.3. I just compiled and installed
ALSA 0.9.0rc2. I've bumbled around with alsamixer, arecord and aplay. I'm
trying to record on the line-in jack. I can hear the sound fine with my
headphones. I can even see levels using snd compiled with alsa support.
But when I record and play the sound sounds unrecognizable.

I use modprobe snd-es1938 to load the sound module.
Then I use alsamixer to choose line-in for capture and increase the volume.
I can hear the volume increasing in my headphones.

Next I arecord -f cd -t wav test.wav
Then I play it: aplay test.wav and it sound like junk.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? It's almost like it's recording 16 bit and
playing back 8 bit or vice-versa.

I can play 8 bit ULAW .au files ok with aplay. I just tried a 16 bit mono
44.1K file though, and it sounds just as bad as my recording. I'm hoping
this is something simple.
