Have you tried setting capture to CD-in and using arecord to record from
that? 

I'm having the same problem... but I can get sound from and record from my
cd-ROM drive, but not from my line in or mic.  I'm not using sb live
though (via8233 on board), but it might help you.... then you can help me!
