The iiwusynth uses ALSA's raw MIDI by default. You can ask it to use
the ALSA sequencer interface by passing the "-malsa_seq" flag on the
command line. Normally, iiwusynth should then show up with aconnect.

It might be a problem with the default master gain. By default, it's set
rather low because the synthesizer does not have any automatic gain
control. Try it again, but with the -g1 (i.e. gain = 1) option.

Swami loads the synth as a shared object and calls it directly. It
doesn't go through the ALSA interface.
