Uhm, I would think InputGain level wasn't high enough or the correct capture
source wasn't selected. However, you reported before you didn't just get
silence but a .wav file with only a header? Try the native ALSA application
arecord (part of 0.5 utils, you _are_ using the ALSA 0.5 drivers, right? ;) ) 
to see what happens.

Also note this from www.alsa-project.org:

*** N.B. The 0.5.x series is considered deprecated and is no longer supported 
by ALSA developers ***

So, switch to the ALSA 0.9 series. HTH :)
