After trying every combination of everything I could think of, I finally gave up on trying to get 0.9.0rc1 to work on my Toshiba laptop. I'm not sure what the problem was, but it seemed to be related to the fact that my OPL3-SA2 is not PnP - the device was never found (with isapnp compiled, not compiled, snd_isapnp=0|1 in modules.conf, etc., etc.).
So, I compiled sound support (inc the opl3sa2 driver) into the kernel, supplied the appropriate configuration info to the kernel, and, after about a week of frustration trying to get alsa to work, I have sound again (alsa 0.5 used to work fine with my 2.2 kernel). Sorry to give up on alsa (at least on this machine) but nothing I did could make it work!
