Strange, it works well here both alsa version although
0.5.12 has wrong frequecy, 0.5.10 is fine and 0.9.0rc1
fine....
this is a i810 box, ac97 ...

try to test the standard kernel; recent kernel has
some memory agp bug with i81x chip set which has not
been resolved. Until 2.4.19-pre6 it is ok. May be it
relates to your sound problem and performance of
2.4.19-pre6 is great! even without preempt patch.
