That was the problem (I had to resize the terminal window to a width of 
more than 300 columns until the 'slider' became visible :-)

Well, I got it working with the OSS driver. But with alsa I get the 
following error message both with xine and aplay:

cw@Aiur:~$ aplay -D cards.pcm.surround51 tmp/test.wav
ALSA lib setup.c:343:(snd_config_get_ctl_elem_value) bad value index
Segmentation fault

Very nice. It appears to be a problem with center/subwoofer channels, 
because '-D cards.pcm.center_lfe' produces the same result but both 
'cards.pcm.rear' and 'cards.pcm.front' work as one would expect.
