I have installed the alsa 0.9.0beta12 driver, lib and utils on a SuSE 7.1
distribution with a 2.2.18 kernel. The installations seems to have gone
correctly but I cannot produce any sound from the rme9636 card using aplay.

sudo aplay -d 0 -c 1 -t wav file.wav

produces

Playing WAVE 'file.wav' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 8000 Hz, Mono

but no audio output. A Ctrl C produces a glitchy noise from the speakers,
which is different for different input files and the message

Aborted...

I have no asound.conf file. I have been unable to unmute the mixer channels
using amixer although I don't know if this is appropriate for the rme-9636.

lsmod produces
