I've got a generic laptop (PowerNotebooks PowerPro 3:33, which is some generic 30n3 laptop) that uses the VIA686A chipset. I've built the ALSA 0.9beta10 drivers with a 2.4.17 kernel. Put simply, it doesn't work. I've configured everything so that the appropriate modules are loaded up. However, the only devices created are the following: rob@localhost:~$ ll /dev/snd/ total 0 crw-rw---- 1 root audio 116, 0 Dec 31 1969 controlC0 crw-rw---- 1 root audio 116, 32 Dec 31 1969 controlC1 crw-rw---- 1 root audio 116, 64 Dec 31 1969 controlC2 crw-rw---- 1 root audio 116, 96 Dec 31 1969 controlC3 crw-rw---- 1 root audio 116, 33 Dec 31 1969 timer So unsurprisingly, trying to run aplay or amixer or whatever results in complaints about it not being able to find the device. I was able to play sound just fine using the kernel driver (via82cxxx_audio) Incidentally, those other devices on IRQ 5 are the Cardbus and Firewire controllers.
