Greetings --

  I've been puzzling over this for a few weeks.

  The ymf744 sound chip in my laptop worked with the OSS driver
installed with RedHat 7.2, and it worked with the alsa-0.5.12a
driver after I got all the mixer channels unmuted.

  But I cannot get it to work with alsa-0.9.0beta10 or with the alsa
cvs sources.

  The driver is loaded; there are no kernel errors reported;
/proc/asound/cards lists the card; /proc/asound/sndstat shows the
card, the audio device, the OPL3, and the MPU-401; if I unmute the
builtin microphone and turn on the 20db boost I can get feedback with
the builtin speakers; lsmod shows ymfpci as used; I've configured the
kernel sources.

  If I try to play a wave file, I get:

$ aplay /usr/share/sounds/startup1.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/startup1.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate
22050 Hz, Stereo
aplay: xrun:864: read/write error

  I've run out of ideas, any suggestions?
