I have the same problem as Nick Thompson. I've VIA8233 sound chip (my only sound source) configured by Mandrake 8.1. quality of music played from CD is ok, but there are noises when music is played from mp3 or wav file. Sound source is recognized as 'VIA 8233 at 0xec00, irq 11', which seems to be correct.
