Michael, Interestingly enough, I get the same "unresolved symbols" in the snd-rawmidi module with Alsa 0.5.12a, but it only happens when I compile with "--with-debug=full". Without the debug flags, I don't get the unresolved symbols error, but using /dev/sequencer hard freezes the computer. Could there be something wrong with MIDI and Alsa with certain chipsets?
