I've been using alsa 0.4 for a year or so with
my CS4236 card, builtin on the board. It's a dell
OptiPlex GX1 computer running Debian Sid.
Now I upgraded my kernel to 2.4.16, added devfs
support, kernel auto loader. I got audio support
compiled into the kernel. And then I compiled
alsa 0.9+0beta9-1, with PNP support. (I also
got PNP + ISA PNP in the kernel).
Then I converted my settings to the 1.0 file
which alsa wanted.
Everthing went smooth, rebooted and the only
error msg I got in dmesg was:
ALSA mpu401_uart.c:404: unable to grab IRQ 0
ALSA card-cs4236.c:499: CS4236+: MPU401 not detected
I started alsamixer to boost the volume, and started
XMMS, it looks like it's playing but no volume. I've
also tried aplay with an .au file, same there.
And if I put my volume on the spearker to MAX and
listens carefully I can hear that it's working too.

Another thing I've noticed is that gmix shows different
stuff now, I only got Synth, Pcm, Line, Mic, CD, IGain. (and
it's labeled mixer00)

Jan 1 1970 sounds weird, but I guess devfs is not perfect ;)
( snddevices shouldn't be needed to run if I understood README right)
