You need to save those settings, and then include a "alsactl restore"
somewhere in your boot process, to restore them.

You can; I use Mandrake, which includes that in one of the bootup scripts
(the one that loads "alsasound", I think). Why do think it would be a
problem to only do it at bootup? Once it's been restored the settings will
stay, until you manually change them with your mixer program.
